A JUMPER SHUNT (or commonly referred to as the JUMPER) is a piece of metal normally surrounded by plastic, fig 19

It is used to join two PINS together and in most cases the JUMPER SHUNT is used to DISCHARGE THE CMOS. The CMOS is an extremely important subject which is covered in the third unit, our concern here is how to DISCHARGE it.

Fig 20 shows this on the MOTHERBOARD. Fig 21 is a bird’s eye view of the three PINS on the MOTHERBOARD with no JUMPER SHUNT on them, while fig 22 shows the JUMPER SHUNT on PINS 2 and 3

We may find that the manual contains the following information, table 01. This means that normally the CMOS JUMPER should be in the 2-3 position or fig 22. To DISCHARGE or CLEAR the CMOS we need to reposition the JUMPER to 1-2 or fig 23.
It is usually left in this position for 5 seconds then the JUMPER is returned back to the ‘normal’ position 2-3. When reading JUMPER settings and we see 2-3 we say “2 to 3” and 1-2 is “1 to 2”
You will find that if the JUMPER is not returned back to its normal position the computer will not BOOT.
Another method is joining two pins together with a JUMPER, since there are only two pins the JUMPER can only be on or off, fig 24, or on fig 25.

This time the information we may have will be similar to table 02. On occasions you may find that the JUMPER is only on one of the pins, fig 25. Since the JUMPER is not joining the pins together it is also in the off position, this is done to keep the JUMPER safe for future use.

- DISCHARGE the CMOS
HOW:
- In most cases these PINS will be located near the CMOS BATTERY, find the CMOS BATTERY (fig 26) either on the MOTHERBOARD or using the schematic diagram, then use one or the other method to DISCHARGE THE CMOS.
If you are unable to locate this JUMPER then removing the LITHIUM BATTERY will also cause the CMOS to DISCHARGE. You will need to press the release spring and then the BATTERY can be removed. Replace after 5 seconds checking that the POSITIVE side of the BATTERY is pointing upwards.
- Firmly insert the DIMM into the SLOT until the retaining clips at both ends snap fully back in place and the DIMM is properly seated.
