FLOOR GROUNDING MATS

Similar to the construction of the bench mat. The Velostat mats fig 04, have a much higher conductive surface and are more rigid than rubber mats. They can support heavier objects and have the ability to remove static charges from items placed on them.

ANTI STATIC WRIST STRAPS

These are worn around the engineer’s wrist and the cord has either a fixing stud so it can be connected directly to an EBP or a crocodile clip which is connected to the computer case fig 05.

ANTI STATIC WRIST STRAPS do not reduce or increase the risk of receiving an electrical shock and you should always follow the same precautions you would use without a wrist strap.

Do not use them if you are likely to come into contact with more than 240 Volts

PACKING

Sensitive devices require protection from static discharge when in transit or storage. Such protection is achieved by enveloping the device in a material with a conducting layer. Often this packing material will also provide some mechanical protection.

ANTI-STATIC PACKING BAGS

Made from Amine free polyethylene and are cheap to produce. They can be found in either clear or pink, and offer little or no protection from electrostatic discharge.

CONDUCTIVE BAGS

These are made from carbon-loaded polyethylene, black and puncture resistant. These give a moderate protection against ESD and are reusable.

METALLISED SHIELDING BAGS

Consisting of a polyester outer layer, aluminium centre layers for shielding, and a polyethylene inner layer for static dissipation. This packing gives the greatest protection against ESD.

The green datacenter
I've often written on the topic of how the different layers of virtualization technology could be used to build a datacenter that makes better use of energy. So, I found it interesting when Dell's analyst relations folks sent me a copy of a paper authored by John Pflueger, Ph. D....

Storage networks
Storage area networks sprang up largely in response to the complexities of managing storage in a Microsoft client-server world - itself ultimately a response to the small machine limitations inherent in both Windows and x86. Today, however, those limitations are receding for most small to mid range businesses and the...
Perlow may be a dinosaur, but the kids aren't
Fellow bloggers Jason Perlow and Ed Bott have been wrangling recently over the Windows 7/Vista/XP user interfaces. While Jason takes a more traditional view (yes, I'm being diplomatic here), Ed welcomes the evolution of the GUI in Windows 7. At first blush, I reacted the same...
Iomega launches new low-price Home Media Network Hard Drives
While HP is taking the high price road in the NAS market with its new MediaSmart Servers, Iomega is going the other direction with its new Home Media Network Hard Drive line. Considering how cheap hard drive prices are getting, it's a reasonable tactic. How reasonable? Iomega is selling the...
Five things Steve Ballmer won't tell you about Windows 7
On Wednesday night, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer is going to step on stage at the Venetian Hotel's Palazzo Ballroom to give the keynote address that kicks off the Consumer Electronics Show. It's the first time for Ballmer, who's taking the slot that his predecessor Bill Gates has had for years....
Microsoft reorg season begins: Muglia gets the presidential nod
A year ago, I wondered when and whether Microsoft would make Bob Muglia, head of the company's Server and Tools business, one of the company's presidents. On January 5, 2009, that happened. by Mary Jo Foley
Google launches Picasa for the Mac!
Last week I blogged about a piece of information that was handed to me: "... A Mac version of Picasa will be launched this year at Macworld ..." It turns out that Google did indeed launch Picasa at this year's Macworld Expo, and...
