Q.  I don't know why we move the motherboard jumpers?

A.  Don't worry too much about this as it often becomes clearer later on.
There's no rush with it and it doesn't matter how many times you go
over it until it sticks.

A Jumper basically is like a switch. If we put the Jumper on, the
switch is on. If we take it off, the switch is off.

This is fine if we have two settings we need to choose between, for example:

Clear CMOS JP1 OFF

Normal JP1 ON


If we found the above diagram, it refers to JP1 this is simply the
name given to the set of pins.

If we leave the Jumper/Shunt ON this means the Computer will behave Normally

If we take the Jumper/Shunt OFF (imagine flicking a switch) this will Clear the CMOS

So moving Jumpers around will effect certain things.

Instead of ON you may sometimes see CLOSED and instead of OFF you may
also see OPEN

All this is true so long as we have two pins, it can either be ON or OFF.

Sometimes (to confuse us I think) the manufacturers will have three
pins instead of two.

In this case we may see.

Clear CMOS JP1 2-3

Normal JP1 1-2


This again refers to JP1 but this time we have three pins instead of two

We will find that one of the Pins has a small mark next to it or it
will have a Number 1.

That means that this pin is Number 1

So in this, case, if the Jumper is covering Pins 1 and Pin 2 it means
that the computer will behave normally.

If we moved it to cover Pin 2 and 3 then it would clear the CMOS.

Sometimes we would have several options available, so in this case we
may find more rows of Jumpers to allow for different combinations, for
example.

CPU Speed Settings

Bus Speed
75 mhz JP2 1-2

100 mhz JP2 2-3

Multiplier
x4 JP3 1-2

x5 JP3 2-3


(at this stage don't worry if you don't exactly understand fully just
what I mean by moving the Jumper)

The above diagram is given the title CPU Speed setting so we will use
it to set the CPU Speed.

Imagine the CPU we have is 500mhz, the formula (this is in task 2) is

BUSSpeed X Multiplier so

JP2 X JP3

to make 500mhz, we use the options we have so

100 x 5

So we need to set JP2 to 100 and JP3 to X5, so this would mean,

2-3 X 2-3

If you dont get that read it over a few times and it might make more sense.

If not I would suggest leaving it and proceeding, don't let it get you
down or hold you back. Moving on will help all the early bits become
clearer.
