Q. I'm installing XP home and it's coming up with the following error, Windows XP Installation failed D:\i386\asms error message (cyclic redundancy check) "The file asma on windows xp home is needed" what is this?

A.  I did some checking myself, I found this I don't know if you did.

Basically it says that it is having some problems reading the CD-ROM drive.

Do you have another CD-ROM drive to try from another machine, just to
see if this makes a difference ?

You can make a bootdisk (floppies) for Windows XP, look for a program
called Makeboot.exe on the CD-ROM, or you could also just go
to www.Bootdisk.com and download a bootdisk for free.

Of course the bootdisks only handle the very early stages of setup so I
don't think it will really make much difference.
